Our approach to puppies is specific to the ultimate goal of a canine adventure companion.

Unique socialization

We do not adhere to the maxims of traditional puppy socialization. The socialization touted by most trainers these days actually oversocializes and runs counter to the goals of owners who wish for a dog to remain calm and neutral in public or on the trail. While we maintain that socialization is an imperative element for your puppy, we will teach you specific, cutting-edge approaches that increase the likelihood that you will not have a rambunctious, out-of-control adult dog.

positive puppy

At Backcountry Buddies, we like our puppies to be stable and confident when facing the world around them (and ultimately when facing challenges on adventures). We lay a thorough, positive foundation for puppies very young and show them that the world is huge, wonderful, and amazing, but also insure that they default to their people for guidance. Trust-building, controlled exposure, and starting towards your goals early are all themes in our puppy program.

A balanced approach to dog training means that your dog not only knows exactly what they should be doing, but that we also communicate what they should not be doing. We fairly utilize the word, "no" with dogs in a meaningful way so that your companion is not confused or missing half of the conversation.

balanced approach

Many dog trainers are afraid to use the word, "no." At Backcountry Buddies, we have found that when approached in a fair and humane way, teaching your dog what not to do can be as important as teaching them what they should be doing. Clients that are a good fit for us wish to fully communicate with their dog and are comfortable with trusting us to show them how to safely and effectively create boundaries for their dogs.

customized approach

Because we are not tied to a dog training "religion," we are fluent in many different dog training approaches. This means that we can find a solution for almost any dog owner out there! Whether your dog works best for treats, toys, or praise or needs a little more structure and discipline in the approach, we know how to reach your dog and teach them. Rather than bounce around from trainer to trainer trying to find what works, we are a one-stop shop for dog training.

The big bad words: e-collar training. If you think this is "shock collar" training, you've been mislead! E-collar training is the most modern, effective tool to positively communicate with your dog. Don't believe the propaganda, give it a shot!

e-collar experts

The e-collar is an essential tool in our toolbox for creating the fantastic adventure companions that our clients love. Many trainers refuse to use the tool out of ignorance, which is a bummer, because we have seen the magic and reliability it can create! You just can't get the same results with treat-only training, no matter what they say. Luckily, our unique techniques combine high-motivation and positive rewards (lots of food and fun!) with the e-collar to create a happy, but reliable pup.

low-level stimulation

Almost anyone who disapproves of e-collar training is not up-to-date on the modern tools and training techniques used with them. Unlike "shock collars" of the past (which usually had three settings that were all very mean!), modern e-collars use a different type of stimulation (the same technology as a TENS unit in physical therapy offices) and have 127 levels, 12 of which are imperceptible to humans. Backcountry Buddies utilizes these high-quality e-collars at extremely low levels as a way to reach out and tap your dog on the shoulder to remind them of what you asked of them. This is especially useful for dogs that can be "hard of hearing" in distracting environments.

*Note: We do not introduce e-collar training to dogs under 6 months of age.

I just cannot say enough positive things about the training we received for our dear HANDFUL of a puppy, Pepper. I would highly recommend Backcountry Buddies to anyone in need of dog training, because if they can make such huge strides with Pepper, they can do it with ANY dog, trust me!
